Pokhara takes its name from the Nepalese word “Pokhari”, meaning “lake”. The city has historically been an important trading center, linking India to Tibet. Founded in the 16th century, Pokhara flourished as a vital trading point. Its strategic location along ancient trade routes made it a meeting place for merchants and pilgrims. As such, its history is closely linked to trade and spirituality. Pokhara occupies a special place in the history of mountaineering, being the main gateway to the Annapurna mountains. Adventurers from all over the world flock to this town before embarking epic trek around the Annapurna range. The first attempts to climb Annapurna, the first of the fourteen mountains over 8,000 metres to be conquered, were launched from Pokhara. The expeditions were a considerable challenge, but the success of these ascents helped establish the city’s reputation as a starting point for Himalayan adventures. <\/p>\n\n

Lake Phewa and Devi’s Fall waterfall.<\/em><\/h2>\n\n

In addition to its role in mountaineering, Pokhara ‘s natural beauty is epitomized by Lake Phewa. Not far from the lake is the famous Devi’s Fall waterfall. This waterfall is also known as \u201cPatale Chhango\u201d in Nepalese. It’s a unique site that offers an impressive spectacle of water tumbling down the rocks in a narrow gorge. If you go at the right time of day, the sun’s rays literally pierce the water droplets, creating a magical rainbow. Local history recounts a fascinating legend linked to this waterfall, adding a mystical dimension to its natural charm. According to local legend, the name \u201cDevi’s Fall\u201d or \u201cDavis Fall\u201d derives from the name of a Swiss tourist named Devi, and his girlfriend. In July 1961, the Swiss couple swam into the falls and both drowned. It was only after a three-day search that their bodies were found in the Phurse River. The name of the waterfall was therefore given to Devi as a tribute to her. However, the Nepalese name for the waterfall is Patale Chango, meaning underground waterfall. <\/p>\n\n
