Located on Australia’s east coast, Brisbane is a vibrant and diverse city that harmoniously combines its rich past with a thriving economy and unique natural treasures.<\/p>\n

Brisbane’s history dates back to the first European explorations of Australia in the 18th century. The region was discovered by Captain James Cook in 1770, but it wasn’t until the 19th century that the city was founded. The first prison settlers arrived in 1824, and the town was officially named after the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Thomas Brisbane. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The city experienced significant growth during the 19th century, thanks to the gold rush that attracted thousands of fortune seekers. Industrialization and commerce soon followed, transforming Brisbane into a bustling urban center. Today, the city bears witness to its history through preserved historic buildings, such as the Old Windmill, Brisbane’s oldest building, constructed in 1828. <\/p>\n

Today, Brisbane is one of Australia’s economic powerhouses. Its port, one of the busiest in the country, plays a central role in international trade. As well as being a hub for the export of agricultural products, the Port of Brisbane is also a vital center for the manufacturing and logistics sectors. Brisbane has become a popular destination for investors and entrepreneurs thanks to its favorable business environment and developed infrastructure, which now extends throughout Asia and Oceania. <\/p>\n

Walk along the river, the botanical garden and Story Bridge .<\/h2>\n

Whatever the time of day, from early morning when you can watch the rowers, to late evening well after happy hours, the Brisbane River Walk is a popular meeting place for residents and tourists alike. Dotted with parks, caf\u00e9s and public sculptures, the promenade offers a unique perspective on the city. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy bike paths, picnic areas and green spaces along the river, creating a perfect balance between nature and urbanity, fierce commerce and relaxation. <\/p>\n

Brisbane’s riverside Botanic Gardens are a haven of peace where nature flourishes. Founded in 1855, the Botanic Garden houses an impressive collection of Australian and exotic plants. Visitors can wander through themed gardens, discover tropical greenhouses, enjoy the serenity of the riverside, and even take a siesta on the lawn, which is not off-limits. In summer, the heat can be scorching. <\/p>\n

Across the river, the Story Bridge, one of the city’s iconic bridges, is a true symbol of the past. Inaugurated in 1940, this metal arch bridge majestically spans the Brisbane River, offering spectacular panoramic views of the city. Its fascinating history and distinctive architecture make it a must-see attraction for visitors, who can, if they’re brave enough, access the upper structure for a spectacular crossing into the void. Unfortunately, cameras are not allowed for safety reasons, as we are roped up. <\/p>\n

The Lone Pine Sanctuary and the wealth of Australian wildlife.<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Just outside Brisbane lies the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Founded in 1927, it is the oldest koala sanctuary in the world and plays a major role in saving koalas, which are now endangered due to wildfires and the drastic loss of their habitat. There, you can observe these adorable creatures up close as they strike incredible poses, and even hold them in your arms, just like you would a baby or a teddy bear. Not far from the city, other wildlife centers allow you to get up close to\u2014and sometimes interact with\u2014other Australian icons such as kangaroos, wombats, cassowaries, emus, parrots, and even dangerous crocodiles. It\u2019s true that Australia\u2019s above-water flora and fauna are every bit as diverse as the underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef, just a little further north\u2014which is also in grave danger. <\/p>\n

Further south, it’s the Gold Coast, a favorite weekend playground offering all kinds of maritime entertainment, including the surf spots so dear to our Australian friends. In fact, Brisbane is much more than just a thriving metropolis. It’s a city that has preserved its past while evolving towards a promising future. Between its captivating history, dynamic economy, architectural gems and exuberant nature, Brisbane offers a unique experience that enchants with its brilliance. I’d like to pay tribute to my guide Neil, who has given me such a wonderful experience all these years. <\/p>\n
