Canton: tradition and modernity.

History and traditions.

Located in southern China, Canton, also known as Guangzhou, is a city rich in history, tradition and flavor. Founded over two millennia ago, the city has witnessed many changes through the ages, but has always managed to preserve part of its ancient heritage despite the dazzling urban development of recent decades.

Canton has a fascinating history dating back to antiquity. Capital of Guangdong province, the city was once a major seaport and trading center on the Silk Road. Over the centuries, it has been the scene of numerous cultural and commercial exchanges, which have contributed to the enrichment of its cultural heritage.

Ancestral traditions live on in the cultural practices, festivals and ceremonies that punctuate the lives of local residents. Chinese New Year, the Moon Festival and the Dragon Boat Festival are just some of the occasions when the city comes alive to the rhythm of age-old customs.

Cantonese cuisine is renowned the world over for its finesse and diversity. With a culinary history that dates back centuries, it harmoniously combines flavors, textures and cooking techniques. Iconic dishes such as Peking duck, dim sum and wonton noodles are must-tries on a visit to Canton. Canton also reflects the contrasts between modernity and tradition. The city is constantly evolving, with new skyscrapers emerging every year, testifying to the region’s economic dynamism. However, this rapid modernization has also led to the destruction of many older districts, sacrificing part of the city’s historical heritage.

Small traditional markets, though increasingly rare, are still present, offering visitors an authentic experience of the daily life of Canton’s inhabitants. The heat of summer adds to the lively atmosphere of these places, where stalls overflow with fresh produce and local specialities.

Environmental challenges.

Despite its undeniable charm, Canton faces major environmental challenges. Heavy industrial activity in the city’s outlying areas has led to severe air pollution, which can sometimes darken the sky and adversely affect air quality. This represents a major challenge for local authorities, who are striving to find sustainable solutions to protect the environment and the health of local residents.

Hidden treasures nearby.

Close to Guangzhou, I’d say within an hour’s drive, are hidden treasures such as traditional, almost abandoned villages. These villages, with their red-brick houses and rounded pediments, offer a precious glimpse of rural life in China before massive urbanization. Activities are traditional, with farming and fish rearing in nearby lakes. The streets are narrow and sometimes, through an open door, you can see what a traditional kitchen was like, with the stove still in use. Certainly of great beauty, the preservation of these living spaces is essential to maintain the link with the past and to offer future generations a rich and diverse cultural heritage.

Canton is a fascinating city that harmoniously combines tradition and modernity. With its rich history, delicious cuisine and living traditions, it offers visitors an unforgettable experience. However, it also faces significant challenges, particularly in terms of the environment and heritage preservation. So it’s with great curiosity that you should explore this unique city, full of local stories buried beneath rampant modernization, but still present in small islands of culture preserved by people who have remained authentic to the present day.
