Floating markets, a Thai tradition.

Damnoen Saduak is certainly the floating market near Bangkok Bangkok’ s most famous floating market.

As early as 6 a.m., the pirogues set up side by side and the first scents of the floating kitchens mingle in a patchwork of typical smells and spices. After the tasty discoveries, the pleasure of the eyes and the general good mood give this place a picturesque and cheerful note. You can find not only fruit and vegetables, but also flowers, kitchen utensils and just about anything for the home, including clothes.

Despite the blazing sun, the saleswomen often wear colorful costumes and the almost obligatory traditional hat. Smiles are the order of the day, and I remember spending long hours capturing these magnificent portraits. All ages are represented, even if the sun is merciless with over 40°C under the hat. That’s why there’s a space between the head and the hat, to let the air circulate more easily, for a relative cooling effect.

Everyone smiles to attract customers. Cooking in this heat on a pirogue requires dexterity and concentration. During moments of relaxation, we take the opportunity to catch up on the latest events of the weekend. But beware, the tourists are not far away, and we must quickly get back to work. Luckily, you can recognize them by the hats they’re wearing!

Unless it’s thanks to the smile that eventually rubs off on everyone. Isn’t it said that Thailand is the land of smiles? Hum…… well, almost for everyone.

In any case, children are never forgotten. After school, they stop off to taste the local dishes and spend a last moment together. A real treat for the eyes, taste buds and spirits!
