Local history recounts a fascinating legend linked to this waterfall, adding a mystical dimension to its natural charm. According to local legend, the name “Devi’s Fall” or “Davis Fall” derives from the name of a Swiss tourist named Devi, and his girlfriend. In July 1961, the Swiss couple swam into the falls and both drowned. It was only after a three-day search that their bodies were found in the Phurse River. The name of the waterfall was therefore given to Devi as a tribute to her. However, the Nepalese name for the waterfall is Patale Chango, meaning underground waterfall.
